Nikolas case should isolate 2nd generation Bolsonarists – 09/03/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

The first generation of the Bolsonarist bench made noise when it arrived in Congress, in 2019. The parliamentarians used their mandates to draw attention on the networks, offend opponents, threaten democracy, present projects that intimidated minorities and form a digital shock troop in the service of the then President Jair Bolsonaro.
The newcomers were met with a good deal of tolerance by the congressmen who called the shots in the House and Senate. Some cardinals understood that this crowd was exotic, but they didn’t have enough volume to do significant damage. Others considered that it was not convenient to move away from a group aligned with the Plateau.
The centrão itself joined the Bolsonarist bench when it began to manage a pro-government majority, mainly in the Chamber. The elected deputies riding with Bolsonaro helped with the polls while continuing to use plenary sessions and commissions as ideological playgrounds.
Second-generation Bolsonaristas extracted new electoral dividends from delinquency and debauchery — and decided to improve these practices. On Wednesday (8), the most voted deputy in the country donned a wig and made an attack on trans women in the plenary of the Chamber.
The transphobia episode has forced a backlash from the political establishment, but there is a whiff of hesitation in the air. The mayor, Arthur Lira, expressed a “public reprimand” to the parliamentarian, but gave no clues about the punishment he could suffer. Party leaders speak of a warning and consider impeachment unlikely.
A rigorous response would be important, first of all, to discourage the practice of crimes within the plenary and the use of smut as a political method.
But the case also creates the opportunity to isolate radical Bolsonarism at a time when it is fragile and distant from power. The mission should interest even rational oppositionists.
