Newspaper states that Cacique Serere was released; STF says it has no information about the case

The indigenous leader José Acácio Serere Xavante, 42 years old, arrested since December 12 of last year accused of leading demonstrations questioning the result of the presidential elections and criticizing the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes and Luís Roberto Barroso, was released yesterday (9), according to the newspaper Metropolises.

According to the newspaper’s report, Serere left the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, in Brasília, wearing an electronic ankle bracelet. The release of the indigenous man would have been authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes. When contacted, the STF’s office neither confirmed nor denied the release, saying only that it had no information about the case.

At the beginning of last month, a report from People’s Gazette showed that the prison had affected the indigenous people’s health. Also in August, Serere released a letter in which he apologized to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes. “I humbly apologize to the Brazilian people for any exaggerated statements I made when criticizing the Brazilian electoral system. On August 18, the STF formed a majority to make Serere a defendant for incitement to commit a crime against constitutional powers. According to a complaint by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), Serere Xavante would have used his leadership position to attract people to commit crimes, such as threatening President Lula and STF ministers Alexandre de Moraes and Luís Roberto Barroso with aggression.
