Around a thousand drones lit up the sky over Manhattan, New York, on Friday night (15), in an act in defense of the Amazon.
The light show was performed by environmental activists during a performance by Brazilian DJ Alok, days before President Lula’s (PT) scheduled speech during the 78th UN General Assembly.
The equipment flew over the island in synchronization and formed figures of animals from the Amazon fauna, such as the pink dolphin and the jaguar. A tree, the map of Brazil and a globe of red lights – representing fire – with the words “Amazonia burns, the world burns” were also seen.
The drones also formed words like “protect me” and “save the Amazon, save the life” — in translation, save the Amazon, save life.
The show’s soundtrack was composed by the song “Shiva Vaishu”, produced by Alok and has indigenous inspiration.
The event was carried out by the organization Avaaz, which operates internationally and is involved in the main environmental issues under discussion. On X —the old Twitter—, the entity published that “more magic is to come”.
The presentation takes place two days after the government of the state of Amazonas declared an environmental emergency in cities in the south of the territory and in the metropolitan region of Manaus.
In the first 12 days of September, the state recorded 77% of the number of fires recorded during the entire month of August. There were 4,127 between September 1st and 12th, a number that puts the state in the lead in fire records, followed by Pará (3,500) and Mato Grosso (1,954). The data are from Inpe (National Institute for Space Research).
The Amazon is still experiencing a severe drought in its rivers.
By tradition, Brazilian presidents open the assembly’s speeches. Lula will take the stand next Tuesday (19). The president embarked on Friday for Cuba, where he stopped before heading to New York.
