New season of the show ‘Cabaré Chinelo’ starts in February

Manaus (AM) – “Cabaré Chinelo”, a show by Ateliê 23 nominated for the 34th Shell Theater Award, is back for a new season and begins the series of performances at Teatro Gebes Medeiros, av. Eduardo Ribeiro, Centro, on the 22nd and 23rd, at 8pm.

Advance tickets are now available for R$25 (half price) and R$50 (full price) on the websites atelie23.com, ShopIngressos.com and on Instagram (@atelie23).

The director of the company and the show, Taciano Soares, highlighted that ticket sales will be advanced every two sessions.

“Our proposal is to sell all the dates in advance so that the public can plan”, says Taciano Soares, who shares the command of Ateliê 23 with Eric Lima. “In the first semester, the participation of ‘Cabaré Chinelo’ in the Curitiba Festival, in April, will be a milestone for the company along with the show’s nomination for the Shell Theater Award”,

Amazon Theater

In March, on the 22nd, “Cabaré Chinelo” makes its only performance of the year at Teatro Amazonas. According to the director, on the 20th, the album will be released with the soundtrack of the show on the stage of the state’s greatest historical heritage.

“We recorded a musical album of the play, we will distribute it on digital platforms and the launch will be at Teatro Amazonas, with the participation of the Chamber Orchestra and conducted by maestro Marcelo de Jesus”,

details Taciano Soares.

With 17 artists on stage, the play features Vivian Oliveira, Sarah Margarido, Andira Angeli, Julia Kahane, Thayná Liartes, Fernanda Seixas, Daphne Pompeu, Daniely Peinado, Vanja Poty, Ana Oliveira, Bruna Pollari, Allícia Castro, Taciano Soares and Eric Lima, as well as musicians Yago Reis, Guilherme Bonates and Stivisson Menezes.

The project, in partnership with the Argentine theater company García Sathicq, has support from the Government of Amazonas, through the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, University of the State of Amazonas (UEA) and the Amazonas State Research Support Foundation ( Fapeam), in addition to the National Arts Foundation (Funarte) and Fondo de Ayudas para las Artes Escénicas Iberoamericanas – IBERESCENA.

Company projects

Taciano Soares points out that 2024 for Ateliê 23 reflects the investment in public policies through notices, with projects that will be carried out thanks to municipal, state and federal funding.

“Among them, I highlight the Funarte (National Arts Foundation) project to support groups, in which we will have the ‘Ateliê 23:10 anos’, to talk about what we have been doing. The initiative embraces the fact that we make documentaries, re-release repertoire pieces, put together new pieces, open debates, encourage relationships with research and promote new productions, new artists”, says the artist. “The Studio will be a mishmash of projects.”

Within the program, through the Funarte Circulation and Diffusion of Dance Award – 2022, the company is presenting the show “Da Silva” in Recife, Caruaru, Belo Horizonte and Ouro Preto, in addition to Manacapuru and Itacoatiara, in the interior of Amazonas.

Premieres

On the list of new features for this year are the staging of the new theater show “Sebastião”, the recording of the new short film “Pinheirinho” and the launch of two books: Bionarrativas Cânicas and dramaturgies about women containing the works of the group “Helena ”, “The Woman Who Unlearned how to Dance” and “Cabaré Chinelo”.

“The new show, ‘Sebastião’, will bring up the relationship between homosexuality and the Christian religion, this right that is often denied to the faith of gay bodies; and ‘Pinheirinho’ is the group’s third short film, with a reflection on being an artist based on a story, always true, that we lived in 2016”,

explains Taciano Soares.

The company is also preparing to hold a new edition of APTA – Research and Training Workshop in Acting, in partnership with the extension of the State University of Amazonas (UEA), with guidance for new artists in their scenic creations.

Reassemblies and expanded headquarters

The plays “Da Silva”, “Helena” and “Ensaio de Despedida” are confirmed for 2024, in seasons at the headquarters of Ateliê 23, located at Rua Tapajós, 166, Centro de Manaus. The place will also host conversations about cinema and cultural production.

“All of our actions, with the exception of the ‘Cabaré Chinelo’ season, will take place within the space of Ateliê 23, which, in February, will open its doors to the public again, with an expanded performance room”, highlights Taciano Soares . “It’s an intimate place for 60 people, but it will receive these actions, because that’s how we built our history, occupying a lot of our headquarters and making it our springboard for the processes we achieved in 10 years”.

Repertoire

In August 2024, Ateliê 23 completes 11 years of operation in the Amazonian cultural scene. The company has 30 shows, five concerts and four audiovisual works in its repertoire.

The main characteristic of the group is working with real stories, the subject of the PhD thesis “Scenic Bionarratives: Devices of Commotion in Works of Ateliê 23”, defended by director Taciano Soares at the Federal University of Bahia.

Among the works that were successful with the public and critics are “Helena”, selected for the a_ponte exhibition: scene from the university theater at Itaú Cultural and nominated for the Brasil Musical Award; “da Silva” and “Ensaio de Despedida”, nominated for the Palco Giratório project, at Sesc; “Vacas Bravas” and “Persona – Face Um”. The latter put the topic of transphobia on the agenda and ran for a year and a half.

Award-winning group

In 2023, Ateliê 23 was nominated for the 34th Shell Theater Award, with the show “Cabaré Chinelo”, in the “Energia que Vem da Gente” category, which rewards initiatives related to the theatrical universe with positive social impact. The result will be announced on March 12th, in São Paulo.

Ateliê 23 also won two categories of the 22nd Cenym National Theater Award, from the Academy of Arts in Theater of Brazil, “Best Company” and “Best Costume Design”, with the show “Cabaré Chinelo”. The play was also nominated for “Best Cast” in this edition.

At the 17th Amazon Theater Festival, held in October, “Cabaré Chinelo” won three awards: “Best Show”, “Direction” and “Best Costume Design”. The play was nominated in the categories “Best Actress”, with Vivian Oliveira, “Best Actor” and “Soundtrack”, with Eric Lima.

The company won the award for best national performance at the 8th Goiás International Sexual and Gender Diversity Film Festival, with the character Belinho, played by Taciano Soares in the film “A Bela é Poc”, the group’s first short film.

Since its premiere, in October 2021, at Teatro Amazonas, the short “A Bela é Poc” has been circulating at festivals, such as Circuito Penedo de Cinema, in Alagoas; 2022 edition of the Amazon Film Festival – Olhar do Norte, in the capital of Amazonas; Shorts México, one of the biggest short film festivals in Latin America; and KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, an annual LGBT event that takes place in Mumbai, India. The film, which is part of a project that includes the clip “Glowria” and the video dance “Azul”, also participated in the “Cultural Expedition”, run by the Government of Amazonas through the State Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy, and was shown in nine cities in the interior.
