New PF investigation sees link between PCC and Adélio Bispo, says newspaper

A supposed new investigation conducted by the Federal Police since last year has found evidence that the defense of Adélio Bispo de Oliveira, who stabbed Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in 2018, may have been paid by the criminal faction PCC, according to information published this Wednesday. (19) by the newspaper Folha de São Paulo.

The PF stated to People’s Gazette that “does not comment on ongoing investigations”. According to Folha, the new investigation points out that one of the lawyers who defended Adélio, Fernando Costa Oliveira Magalhães, would have received payments from members of the PCC two years after the attack against the former president.

Magalhães denied involvement and said that the transfers are related to the defense of other clients, not Adélio. There are at least four indications of payments pointed out in the new investigation, including the discovery by Coaf (Council for the Control of Financial Activities) of fractional payments of BRL 315 thousand made in 2020 by people allegedly linked to the faction to a company in the attorney’s name.

And, also, a message exchange group between lawyers in the WeChat application with the name “Adélio PCC”. According to the investigation, the group had the participation of the lawyer Zanone Oliveira Junior, who was in charge of Adélio’s defense panel, with conversations that reported the concern with the fact that Magalhães had acted in the defense of members of the PCC.

At the time of the investigations, Zanone told the PF that he would have charged between BRL 150,000 and BRL 300,000 if he had stayed on the case until the eventual arrival of appeals to the Federal Supreme Court. The investigations showed that Adélio acted alone in the attack, due to mental insanity, according to repeated psychiatric reports made at different stages of the investigation, which led him to be considered incompetent and to comply with security measures at the federal penitentiary in Campo Grande (MS).

The conclusion of the case, however, has always been questioned by the former president’s family, who have always put forward the thesis that Adélio would have acted at someone’s behest. The suspicion occurred mainly due to the lack of information about who would have funded Adélio’s defense.

According to Folha de São Paulo, Zanone would have stated that he took up the defense after being approached by a person from an evangelical church attended by Adélio, who would have advanced R$ 5,000 in cash. The contract, however, was terminated after the case took on new proportions.

A year after the attack, the PF allegedly questioned worshipers who attended the same churches as Adélio, but found no evidence of third-party financing of the lawyers.

“As for the amounts received for Adélio’s defense, such contract and tabulations are exclusively related to Dr. Zanone Junior. I, Fernando Magalhães, was invited by him to assist in the defense, I suffered serious and enormous personal damage to the cause. , family and financial,” Magalhães told Folha de São Paulo.

The lawyer also stated that the group in the WeChat application was a “thoughtless joke by one of the lawyers, and, due to my seriousness and commitment, I immediately reprimanded him, since the topic is serious and such a joke did not seem acceptable to me”.

The Federal Public Defender’s Office, which currently represents Adélio and acts as curator, stated that it was not notified of the new investigation by the PF.
