New High School should be approved in the first half of 2024

Government must intensify coordination with the Legislature, according to Camilo Santana

The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, stated this Wednesday (28) that he expects the approval of the New High School project in Congress by the first half of this year. The proposal is under analysis in the Chamber of Deputies.

“So that we can implement the change in high school for 2025, [o projeto] must be approved by this semester. There needs to be time for networks to prepare for the change. Approval this semester in the Chamber and the Senate is essential”,

said the minister during an event to launch the new composition of the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Education.

New president of the Front, federal deputy Rafael Brito (MDB-AL) declared that he expects the proposal to be approved by March in the Chamber. According to him, negotiations are ongoing and the president of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), is involved.

“You have to vote urgently. There is a commitment from the Chamber to the MEC to vote in March, but there is still great resistance regarding which text will be voted on [….] I think both sides are willing to talk,”

said the deputy.

The New Secondary Education project is reported by deputy Mendonça Filho (União-PE), who was the Minister of Education during the government of Michel Temer (MDB), when the remodeling of Secondary Education was prepared. Last year, the rapporteur presented a new version of the project sent by the Lula government on Secondary Education, but there was no agreement to vote on the text.

In his report, Mendonça Filho increased the hours of mandatory classes compared to the current rule, but reduced them in relation to the Ministry of Education’s suggestion sent to Congress in October last year.

The government’s intention, according to Camilo Santana, is to intensify negotiations with congressmen for the proposal to move forward.

He also stated that the Executive must send the National Education Plan (PNE) by April, which includes the goals for the sector for the next ten years. The minister’s expectation is that the plan will be approved by Congress by the end of 2024.

“The National Education Plan must be forwarded by April by the President of the Republic so that Congress can move forward and approve it this year”,

declared.
