New Fuvest list has works that are difficult to find – 11/22/2023 – Education

For the first time in history, Fuvest will have a mandatory reading list only with works written by women — the new list is valid from the test that will be applied in 2025, for admission to university in 2026.

Released this Tuesday (22), the list ranges from works such as “Opúsculo Humanitária” (1853), by Nísia Floresta, a 19th century feminist author, to contemporary titles such as “A Visão das Plantas” (2019), by Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida .

Students looking for books now, however, may face some difficulty finding them. “I hope that new editions will appear from now on, so that all students have easy access to these readings”, says Fernando Marcílio, literature professor at the Anglo Course.

He says that students will already have the challenge of reading and analyzing the works, so they shouldn’t have to face extra obstacles to access the books. “I hope that Brazilian publishers pay attention to this and take advantage of the commercial opportunity that arises with this list”, he adds.

A Sheet asked the Department of Education of the State of São Paulo to find out if there were plans to acquire the works to supply libraries, but the department did not respond.

In a consultation carried out on the afternoon of this Wednesday (22), the report did not find copies of “Nebulas” (1872), by Narcisa Amália, available in libraries, virtual used bookstores or bookstores.

As for “The Gypsy Christ” (1961), by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, no copies were found in libraries. There are only options for purchase, such as at the Martins Fontes bookstore (R$88) or on Amazon (R$126), according to a consultation carried out this Wednesday.

The book “Opúsculo Humanitária” is in the public domain and can be downloaded from the Federal Senate website. There are also copies for sale on the Virtual Bookshelf.

As for “Memórias de Martha” (1899), by Julia Lopes de Almeida, the work is available at the Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin, at USP, and in some bookstores.

This relative difficulty in finding some of the works on the new list is in line with what Fuvest itself proposes, to rescue silenced authors in the history of literature.

Other titles on the Fuvest 2026 list are easier to access. “As Meninas” (1973), by Lygia Fagundes Telles, and “A Visão das Plantas”, are available, for example, on BibliON, the São Paulo government’s virtual library.

These two works are also part of the collection of public facilities such as the São Paulo Library and Parque Villa-Lobos, as well as “Canção de Lullaby Menino Grande” (2018), by Conceição Evaristo. Furthermore, they are all easily found in second-hand bookstores and bookstores.

As for the book “Balada de Amor ao Vento” (1990), by Paulina Chiziane, the report only found copies for sale.

For experts, Fuvest’s decision is important. “Fuvest’s care in choosing writers and contact with such powerful texts has formative potential for new generations”, says Vinicius Teixeira, literature professor at Colégio Oficina do Estudante.

According to him, the “oxygenation” of mandatory reading lists enables a richer and more questioning literary experience for students.

Fernando Marcílio, from Anglo, believes that the new works will be assimilated without difficulty by students.

“The general theme of literature with a feminine theme or written by women, or even with a black theme, is not a strange topic for students nowadays”, he says, for whom the level of difficulty of the test will be the same.
