New congressman seeks to be able to attend debates in the election – 07/22/2023 – Panel

After seeing its bench in Congress shrink from 8 to 3 deputies in the 2022 elections and not reaching the barrier clause –which removes the party from the electoral program and limits access to the party fund– the Novo party designed a more aggressive strategy aimed at 2030, when the clause will require 3% of the parties’ votes.

The most urgent one is to bring another congressman to the party, since it takes 5 to, in obedience to the electoral law, be invited to debates for city halls. In addition to the 3 deputies, Novo brought Senator Eduardo Girão from Ceará last February.

The senator’s arrival is part of another party task aimed at resurrection in 2026 and survival in 2030: expanding its representation in Northeastern states. In addition to Ceará, the party is betting on more than 30 candidates in Maranhão.

Although the effect was felt in 2022, the president of the party, Eduardo Ribeiro, sees in 2020 the big strategic mistake of the party, when he ran in just 46 cities in municipal elections, whether for the Executive or the Legislative. For Ribeiro, the legend “lost timing” after the good performance in 2018 and the chance to have capillarity throughout Brazil.

In 2024, the strategy is to launch candidacies for councilor or mayor “anywhere there is interest”. The party plans to have candidates in 300 to 400 municipalities.

Three other changes in strategy should make the party more pragmatic: there will be fewer restrictions on coalitions, more prospecting for names from other parties – including mayors who will run for re-election – and fewer small candidacies for the Executive.

“The time of competing just to compete and mark a position is over”, says Ribeiro.

In 2020, Novo elected only one mayor, Adriano Silva, from Joinville (SC), but it has already “prospected” the mayors of Divinópolis (MG), Patos de Minas (MG) and Ascurra (SC).

Previously resistant to the use of the electoral fund, Novo also changed its position. He started to invest the R$ 106 million accumulated in the years he survived without the fund and spends the income, in addition to receiving donations. Capitalization helped the party to hire staff, no longer relying solely on volunteer militants.

In 2022, 12 parties or federations reached the 2% barrier clause. Novo projects that by 2030 between 7 and 9 subtitles will survive.
