The new commander of the Army, Tomás Paiva, told President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) that the ongoing investigations into the participation of military personnel in the coup acts of January 8, in Brasília, will advance.
The two met this Thursday (26), at the Planalto Palace, in the presence of Defense Minister José Múcio Monteiro.
According to reports, Tomás asked Lula to trust him and give him time to carry out the constructions in order to pacify the government’s relationship with the Army.
He also said that the opinions regarding the investigations that target uniforms are being elaborated.
It was the first more in-depth conversation between Tomás and Lula since the military was named commander, last Saturday (21).
That day, the general was taken to the president to be presented as the substitute for Júlio César de Arruda, who had commanded the troops until then.
Arruda’s dismissal came amid an open crisis of confidence following the January 8 attacks.
Tomás Miguel Miné Ribeiro Paiva, the new head of the Army, was military commander for the Southeast (responsible for São Paulo).
In the week before his promotion, he had released an incisive speech in defense of institutionality, asking for respect for the results of the elections and affirming the Army as non-political and non-partisan.
