A survey by Cepea-USP, in Piracicaba (SP), in partnership with the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) indicates that the population employed in the sector gained 341 thousand people in one year. Disclosure The number of national agribusiness workers totaled 28.34 million in 2023. The number is equivalent to 26.8% of the total number of occupations in Brazil last year. This is a record if we consider the historical series of surveys in the sector, since its beginning in 2012. The study is carried out by the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) in partnership with the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea ), from Esalq, the campus of the University of São Paulo (USP) in Piracicaba (SP). 📲 Receive news from the Piracicaba region on WhatsApp The population employed in agribusiness grew by 1.2%. In absolute numbers, 341 thousand people from 2022 to 2023. According to researchers from Cepea/CNA, the increase was driven mainly by the growth in numbers employed in agro-services, with an increase of 772 thousand employees. The increase is equivalent to 8.4% in the number of employed people. In the input segment, the increase was 5.1%, equivalent to 14.54 thousand people. “The advancement in both segments, in turn, is a reflection of the exceptional performance of production within the gate, which stimulates the upstream and downstream segments of agribusiness”, explains Cepea. Population employed in agribusiness grew 1.2%. In absolute numbers, 341 thousand people from 2022 to 2023. Reproduction On the other hand, the population employed in agriculture fell by 5%, with a loss of 432.99 thousand people. Cepea researchers indicate that this scenario is linked to declines observed in horticulture, coffee farming, the cereal group, cattle farming, orange cultivation, forestry production and activities called “other crops” and “other animals”. In the agro-industrial segment, the employed population remained relatively stable. “In this case, there were advances in the livestock agro-industries, driven by the slaughter and dairy industries, but setbacks in the agricultural agro-industries, pressured by the decline in the number of people working in the sugar, ethanol, coffee, oils and fats, pasta and others, natural-based textiles, clothing and accessories and wooden products and furniture”, specifies Cepea. Profile Between 2022 and 2023, the increase in the population employed in agribusiness was driven by employees, especially those with a formal contract, which indicates the increase in the formalization of employment, and by workers with a higher level of education, with secondary and higher education. This trend, according to Cepea, has been observed in the sector since the beginning of the historical series. GDP of Agro Mais Agro The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Brazilian Agribusiness, calculated by the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) of Esalq-USP, fell 1.37% in the third quarter of 2023, accumulating a drop of 0. 91% in the first nine months of the year. Based on this partial performance, the sector’s GDP could reach R$2.62 trillion in 2023, which would correspond to 24.1% of the Brazilian Gross Domestic Product. The report points out that until last quarter, the sector was in a process of recovering from the drop observed in 2022. The estimate is made by Cepea in partnership with the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA). Agro 5.0 Freepik Price decline The performance of agribusiness in the third quarter was affected by the decline in prices in all segments, according to Cepea researchers. “The result was not more unfavorable due to the record harvest performance in the field and the growth in livestock production, dairy products and slaughter volume. These factors, in turn, resulted in an increase in demand for both the input and agriservices”, explains Cepea. Among the sectors of the sector, when comparing the second and third quarters of 2023, GDP recorded drops for inputs, with a drop of 7.12%; primary segment, which recorded a decline of 1.84%; agro-industries with a negative difference of 0.61%) and for agro-services, with a drop of -0.61%, according to the report. Performance of agricultural and livestock inputs was affected by the drop in the gross value of production by industries in the segment, points out Cepea/CNA. Credit: Ewerton Alves/Neomarc Insumos The performance of agricultural and livestock inputs was affected by the drop in the gross value of production by industries in the segment. The result was due to the reduction in the prices of fertilizers, pesticides and feed throughout the third quarter of the year, coupled with lower production for pesticides and agricultural machinery. Livestock and agriculture From the perspective of the agribusiness sectors, the scenarios were a reduction for agriculture (-1.05%) and livestock (-2.22%) in the third quarter of 2023. In the agricultural sector, GDP fell to inputs (-8.46%), for agroindustry (-0.92%) and for agroservices (-0.97%) and showed modest growth for primary (0.79%). In the livestock sector, there was a slight increase in GDP for agroindustry (0.79%) and agroservices (0.38%), and a decline for inputs (-3.06%) and primary (- 6.22%). After all, what is Agribusiness GDP? Esalq professor and researcher at the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics, Nicole Rennó Castro, explains, in a publication on the Cepea website, that to calculate Agro’s GDP, secondary and official information from IBGE is used. “Agro GDP is a broader and more comprehensive concept than that of agriculture, which also encompasses economic activities from other sectors of activity, industry and services. Specifically, agribusiness is defined as an economic sector with links to agriculture”, he explains she.
