The number 2 tennis player in the world, Rafael Nadal, will be sidelined for six to eight weeks due to the hip flexor injury he suffered during his second-round loss at the Australian Open, the Spaniard’s team said on Thursday.
Nadal, the current champion of the tournament, left the competition on Wednesday after losing to the North American mackenzie mcdonald for three sets to zero, 6/4, 6/4 and 7/5.
The 36-year-old had an MRI scan on his left leg in melbourne, this Thursday (19), which revealed a second-degree injury to the iliopsoas, the main hip flexor.
the champion of 22 grand slams arrived at melbourne with just one win since the US Open as rib, abdominal and foot injuries kept him sidelined for much of last season after Wimbledon. “He will be resting in the next few days when he returns to Spain and will start with anti-inflammatory physiotherapy”his team said in a statement. “The normal estimated time for a full recovery is between six and eight weeks”.
A recovery of six to eight weeks will allow Nadal to return well ahead of the clay season to defend his French Open title between late May and early June.
