Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal announced on Thursday (18) that he will not play in the Rolland Garros tournament. More than that: he said that he will take a career break for the next few months and that he plans to retire in 2024.
Winner of the tournament 14 times, the athlete said that the decision was made due to an injury.
“The evolution of the injury I suffered in Australia has not been as I would have liked. Roland Garros has become impossible,” said Nadal. “I have no intention of continuing to play for the next few months,” he added.
“Right now, I won’t be able to be at Roland Garros. With what this tournament represents for me, you can imagine how difficult it is.”
The Spaniard denied, however, that it is a retirement. He has made it clear that he intends to make 2024 his final year. “I need to set aside my sporting career and try to regenerate my body in the coming months.”
Nadal has stated that he intends to take some time off to recover his body. “And try to face next year with guarantees of being able to do what, I imagine, will be my last year.”
