MST CPI gives stage to the opposition and demands energy from the government – 05/17/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

Deputy Luciano Zucco has already referred to Lula as an ex-convict and compared the occupation of land by the MST to terrorism. Ricardo Salles said that PT administrations are lenient with invasions. Kim Kataguiri sentenced, 100 days into his term, that the current government is disastrous.

President, rapporteur and vice president will have a free stage at the CPI that was set up to investigate the MST’s performance, but has the government as its main target. The commission will hardly get enough breath to disrupt Lula, but it should keep the opposition agitated and demand an extra dose of political mobilization from the Planalto.

The idea of ​​the PT’s rivals is to use the CPI to propose the tightening of laws against the invasion of land (including unproductive areas), but also to outline government links with the landless. Considering that Lula and his assistants already lend public support to the movement, the existence of the investigation can only be explained by the desire to harass the PT.

The risks for the Planalto are the shortcuts that the opposition can take to do damage. One of these paths would be an unjustifiable mass approval of breaches of secrecy by MST leaders and politicians linked to the PT.

If something like that happens, the government will have to fight in the STF, since the composition of the CPI gives the government little margin to contain the opposition’s plans in the vote. Lula’s critics are the majority on the commission, whose vacancies were distributed as a kind of gift to Bolsonaristas who are part of each party.

Even União Brasil, with three government ministries, adopted this method. In addition to Kataguiri, the party has in the CPI a deputy who linked Lula to organized crime and another who called for the president’s downfall on the first day of the legislature.

The choice of names was seen by Planalto as a message, but the government preferred to save energy in the relationship with the party. Lula’s assistants want to save capital to avoid defeats in more sensitive arenas, such as the January 8 CPI.
