The MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers) awaits announcements from the Lula (PT) government this week to define the intensity of Red April, the movement’s annual day of actions to remember the Eldorado do Carajás massacre (1996) and draw attention to the agrarian reform agenda.
The base of the movement is pressing for invasions of unproductive lands on April 17, which should happen — in recent years, they have not reached the hundreds as at the beginning of the century. In addition, demonstrations, marches and other activities are also planned.
The federal government’s Ministry of Agrarian Development is still studying what it will be able to deliver by the 10th.
The MST has been calling for the creation of a single registry of camped families; the presentation of a timetable for assisting the families in the camp, estimated at around 100,000; and the development of a program for the production of organic food and family farming.
The movement also calls for a resolution of the situation of 30,000 families that are in pre-settlement areas, that is, they have not completed the settlement process and, therefore, do not have access to credit and public policies for agricultural production.
