The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Minas Gerais has opened a civil inquiry to investigate whether the INSS (National Institute of Social Security) is denying retirement requests based solely on an automated system.
The investigation was opened based on the complaint of a citizen indicating possible irregularities in the denial of requests for social security and assistance benefits allegedly caused by an automated system, which was not adequately observing the merits.
Republic attorney Angelo Giardini de Oliveira, who signs the piece, argues that there is a need to obtain more information about the computerized system and its regular functioning.
According to the INSS, about 30% of requests go through the computerized system. In October last year, for example, there were 159 thousand decisions.
The system was implemented with the aim of reducing the queue and speeding up responses to beneficiaries. Sought, the INSS claims that automation did not change the percentage of benefit denied.
