The Federal Public Ministry decided to file a complaint against former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro for alleged religious intolerance for a post made on social networks in August last year, during the election period.
At the time, she reposted a publication by councilor Sonaira Fernandes (Republicanos-SP) with a video of then-presidential candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in a candomblé ritual, saying that he “gave his soul to win this election” . Michelle completed the post by stating that “this can, right! I talk about God, no”.
The publication was repudiated by religious leaders, but the Attorney General, Frederico de Carvalho Paiva, considered that the former first lady’s speech did not constitute an attack on the African-based religion, but rather as “a complaint about a possible intolerance suffered for his belief”.
“For all these reasons, the position of the investigated person, despite having prejudiced, intolerant, pedantic and overbearing connotations, finds shelter in freedom of religious expression and, in this dimension, does not fulfill the prohibitive scope of the incriminating criminal norm”, says the prosecutor in the decision.
