The Amazon region and the border of Brazil with French Guiana were highlighted subjects in a meeting between the chief prosecutor of the Attorney General’s Office in Amapá, Alexandre Guimarães, and a delegation composed of generals of the Brazilian Army, on Thursday (25) . During the visit, the Northern Military Commander, Army General Luciano Guilherme Cabral Pinheiro, who took up the post on Tuesday (23), ensured the maintenance and strengthening of institutional ties already established, as well as the intensification of partnerships in the area of intelligence.
At the meeting, the authorities highlighted the importance of the Army’s presence in the border region for the protection of the national territory. The work of the MPF on cross-border issues was considered indispensable and successful. The members of the institutions reported concrete cases and the way in which they overcome challenges of different kinds to carry out work efficiently. They also highlighted the potential for international repercussions of events that occur on the border, such as crimes committed by Brazilians in foreign territory.
Another positive highlight, during the conversation, was the proximity between the institutions in the Amazon region, which enables several joint actions. At the end of the meeting, among mutual thanks, chief prosecutor Alexandre Guimarães was presented with a commemorative medal from the Brazilian Army. The item was delivered by the Northern Military commander, Luciano Guilherme Cabral Pinheiro, who will command the Brazilian Army troops in the states of Amapá, Maranhão, Pará and in the northern portion of Tocantins. During the visit, the Army general was accompanied by Brigadier General Marcus Vinicius Gomes Bonifácio, commander of the 22nd Jungle Infantry Brigade.
