The Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT) informed this Tuesday (28) that it has instituted an administrative procedure to monitor and supervise the provision of legal assistance to all inmates of all prison units in the Federal District, including those involved in the acts of vandalism on January 8 in Brasilia.

According to the agency, the initiative takes place after 15 inspections carried out in the DF prisons in the months of January and February of this year alone. During the visits, prosecutors heard demands related to periodic legal assistance for detainees. The inspections were carried out in all prison units and also in the places where those involved in the acts of January 8, 2022 remain imprisoned.

According to MPDFT, this inspection work is carried out regularly by the Nucleus for Control and Inspection of the Prison System of the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (Nupri), as part of the routine of prosecutors. “Currently, there are more than 17,000 people imprisoned in the DF penitentiary system, of which around 900 were detained on the occasion of the 8th of January. The MPDFT has no legal attribution in these cases, which are being processed by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), with the participation of the Federal Public Ministry (MPF)”, says the note from the body.

According to the MPDFT, Nupri’s activities include inspection, at a collective level, of prison units as a whole, in terms of physical structure, health, education, food, sunbathing, among other rights of persons deprived of liberty. The core also maintains a permanent communication channel, through the ombudsman, to receive denouncements and complaints.
