Brasilia DF) – Following a request for an Access to Information Law, the Vice-Presidency of the Republic released the amounts and details of expenses with the body’s corporate card between 2019 and 2022, under the management of former Vice-President Hamilton Mourão (Republicans). During the four years at the Jaburu Palace, Mourão spent mainly on food and lodging. The general currently holds an elective mandate in the Senate.

Spending amounts were released after a request from Sejam Sabendo, a data agency specializing in access to public information – the same one that released the Presidency’s spending in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL). There is no structured data before 2019, as the agency started recording expenses in an electronic system only at the end of the first half of that year.

In all, Mourão spent R$3.8 million on the corporate card; most of it, in the last two years he was in office: in 2021, R$ 1.1 million were used; in 2022, R$ 1.6 million. The establishment that received the most was the La Palma market, in Asa Norte, a central neighborhood in Brasília. This market is also included in the expenses of the Presidency of the Republic. The owner of the place is a supporter of the former president and was involved in controversy in October last year, when a customer accused him of xenophobia.

There are records of expenditures abroad. Mourão used the card in countries such as Egypt (R$ 187 thousand), China (R$ 132 thousand), Italy (R$ 55 thousand), United States (R$ 55 thousand), Spain (R$ 47 thousand) and Portugal ( BRL 28 thousand). The senator also spent in eight other countries, which totaled R$ 156 thousand.

The corporate card was created to deal with everyday charges, such as the purchase of office supplies and the authentication of a signed document, among other cases that do not require the opening of a bureaucratic process. There are no clear rules in the legislation on how spending on these cards should be, but the Comptroller General of the Union (CGU) has a manual that recommends using them with “caution”.
