Moraes orders PMDF to pay full salary again to 8/1 prisoner

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and rapporteur of the 8/1 actions, Alexandre de Moraes, ordered that the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF) once again pay the full salary to Colonel Jorge Eduardo Naime Barreto, former commander of the Operations Department of the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF).

Colonel Naime has been imprisoned for almost a year by order of Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The soldier is accused of alleged failure to contain the acts of January 8th.

In the decision, issued on January 3, 2024, Moraes orders the corporation to pay the salary retroactively from December 2023 and continue paying with monthly payments. The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) had recommended the release of only 70% of the military’s salary.

The colonel’s defense must request retroactive payment of his salary since August 2023, when the soldier was removed from his duties and had part of his salary blocked.

Colonel Naime was arrested on February 7, 2023 during Operation Lesa Pátria, but the PGR only sent a complaint to Minister Alexandre de Moraes in August through a confidential petition.

In September 2023, unlike the DF Military Police report that attributed the crimes of malfeasance and non-compliance to the colonel, the Federal Police (PF) issued a report on the acts of January 8th in which it does not even mention the name of the soldier .

Minister Alexandre de Moraes has already denied at least four requests for freedom made by Colonel Naime’s defense.

According to Ricardo Cappelli – right-hand man of the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, who was appointed intervenor in the Public Security of the Federal District – Colonel Naime would have purposely delayed the PM’s containment line. Capelli said he saw with “his own eyes” the colonel’s commandos advancing “slowly” on the protesters.

Even though he was on vacation on January 8, Naime left his home to help contain the protesters. During the police action, the soldier was injured by a firecracker. In May, the PGR sent an opinion to the STF in favor of maintaining the soldier’s arrest.

The CPI’s final report on the acts of January 8th of the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District (CLDF), released on November 29th, 2023, also exempted Colonel Naime from any responsibility for the acts of vandalism.
