Moraes is applauded by PT members at the launch of government action

This Monday (11), the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alexandre de Moraes, was applauded by PT members during the launch ceremony of the “Visible Streets Plan”, a program created by the federal government by order of the minister himself.

In August, in response to a request from the Rede and PSOL parties and the Homeless Workers Movement (MTST), Moraes gave the Lula government 120 days to present a National Policy aimed at homeless people.

When announced by the ceremonialist, Moraes was applauded and received by the audience with shouts of “Xandão” and “no amnesty”. The screams refer to those arrested on January 8th, many of whom are detained despite the opinion of the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) in favor of their release.

At ease at the event alongside President Lula (PT), the First Lady, Janja, and the Minister of Human Rights, Silvio Almeida, Minister Alexandre de Moraes defended the “fight” for Human Rights and the “right to demand the equality for all”.

“Why am I here? Because the Federal Court is part of this achievement. With mistakes and successes, the Federal Supreme Court has the mission of guaranteeing human dignity for all people. And, based on an action, an ADPF, several people who are here, I see several friendly faces, were (gathered) on the 20th and 21st of November last year, where more than 60 entities and organizations participated on the issue of rights of the homeless population. How could we, through the courts, obviously within the limits of the Judiciary, help achieve the dignity of homeless people? […] We determine full compliance with the Constitution, full compliance against discrimination, against hostile architecture… The need for recognition of identity, education, health, employment and income. Only with this set is it possible to remove people from the streets,” said Moraes as he was once again applauded by the audience.

According to the government, almost R$1 billion will be committed to the program. The money will be distributed across “seven axes”: Food assistance (R$575.7 million); health (R$304.1 million); institutional violence (R$56 million); citizenship, education and culture (R$41.1 million); housing (R$3.7 million); work and income (R$ 1.2 million); and data production and management (R$ 155.9 thousand).

The program also establishes a Working Group to evaluate and propose methodologies for the production of information on the homeless population and includes the publication of the decree that regulates Law No. 14,489/22, which became known as the Padre Julio Lancellotti Law and prohibits the “use of hostile construction techniques in open spaces for public use”.
