Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered the opening of three more investigations to investigate suspects involved in the demonstrations that ended with acts of vandalism on January 8 in Brasília. The measure responds to a request from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR). There are currently four other similar inquiries open that investigate authorities, financiers and perpetrators of depredations at the headquarters of the Three Powers.

In the request, the PGR mentions possible crimes of terrorism, coup d’état, criminal association, violent abolition of the Democratic State of Law, coup d’état, threat, persecution and incitement to crime.

“On January 8, 2023, a violent and anti-democratic mob, dissatisfied with the result of the 2022 election, aiming for the abolition of the Democratic State of Law and the deposition of the legitimately constituted government, advanced against the headquarters of the three Powers of Republic, demanding a swift and energetic state response”, says the PGR in the request forwarded to the STF. The information was published by g1.

In the new request, the PGR cites the arrest of almost 1,000 people suspected of participating in acts of vandalism, but states that, although it is a representative number, it is essential to identify others involved in the attacks who were not arrested in the act at the time.

“The correct interpretation of the images, for the civil identification of the perpetrators, will be facilitated by the information collected by Brazilian civil society, which, for the most part, vehemently disapproved of the crimes committed on January 8, 2023”, says the PGR.

Inquiry against authorities

On January 13, Moraes responded to another request from the PGR and determined the opening of an inquiry against the governor removed from the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB-DF), the former Security Secretaries of the DF Anderson Torres and his interim, Fernando de Sousa Oliveira, in addition to the former general commander of the Military Police of the DF Fábio Vieira. The determination aims to investigate possible responsibility of the authorities in relation to acts of vandalism. In the decision, Moraes points out that some facts reveal the omission and connivance of several authorities in the area of security and intelligence in the Federal District.

Investigation against Bolsonaro

On the same day, Moraes included former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the investigation that investigates the intellectual authorship of the acts of vandalism, in Brasília, on the 8th, also at the request of the PGR. The PGR’s request was motivated by a post on social media by the former president of a video that questioned the fairness of the result of the 2022 elections. The publication was made two days after the invasions of the headquarters of the Three Powers. The post was deleted by Bolsonaro.

“The pronouncement of the former President of the Republic, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, turned out to be one more occasion on which the then representative positioned himself in a way, in theory, criminal and offensive to institutions, in particular the Federal Supreme Court – attributing to his ministers the fraud of the elections to favor a possible candidate – and the Superior Electoral Court -, maintaining, without any evidence, that the result of the Elections was fraudulent”, wrote the minister.
