When speaking at the opening of the 1st session of 2024 at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the president of the Court, minister Alexandre de Moraes, announced the creation of a “study group” in partnership with the Lula government (PT) to track people “ that attack democracy.”

“The Superior Electoral Court and the Ministry of Justice and Public Security are setting up a study, work and execution group with members of the TSE and the PF [Polícia Federal] so that we can improve what has already been done, improve in the sense of tracking those who attack democracy, attack the free will of voters”, informed Moraes.

The minister did not say how many people will be part of this group, nor did he explain the criteria used to define who will be considered undemocratic.

Moraes also pressured Congress for regulation of social networks and said that the sector will be regulated by the TSE in this year’s municipal elections. For the minister, the free use of social networks is one of the “big problems” of contemporary democracies.

“There is a need for general regulation by the National Congress in defense of democracy. There is no longer any way to admit that social networks are a no man’s land, a lawless land”, he declared

The minister also called for the accountability of Big Techs for the dissemination of content considered inappropriate or false.

“They must be responsible for what they gain economic fruits from. They must be responsible for the content that their algorithms boost, indicate, and take to voters, and, with that, they obtain an economic gain,” he stated.
