Moraes: Action on Bolsonaro fell into mass grave at TSE – 06/13/2023 – Politics

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), said that the actions that could make former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) ineligible fell into the “mass grave” of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), the court he presides over.

The statement was made by the minister this Tuesday (13), after being asked about the speed of the process against Bolsonaro scheduled for June 22, during an event promoted by Piauí magazine.

The minister declared that the TSE judges according to the Constitution and the law and that everything that is released for judgment in the court is voted and “there is no choice of cases”.

“This has arrived to judge, we are going to judge, regardless of the result, the TSE will fulfill its mission. The Electoral Justice has always been quick, not least because the deadlines are different, and everything that arrives is judged. for involving a former president, that I would take this case, I will wait for a propitious moment, no. The action that goes to the vote analyzes whether a meeting promoted by Bolsonaro with ambassadors at the Palácio do Alvorada, in July last year, constitutes abuse of political power. At the time, the then president made accusations against the electoral system without presenting evidence.

Moraes also commented on alleged criticisms that the electoral court never removed a governor from the Southeast region.

“Has a lawsuit arrived with evidence to impeach a governor of the Southeast or will you have to do it just because you also impeached a governor from another location?”, he countered.

He stated that the questioning about the legitimacy of the electoral process is already over with the end of the election because, if the population did not believe in the fairness of the system, they would not have gone to vote.

“One thing is a political speech, another is reality. We had 80% of the electorate going to vote and, for the first time, less abstention in the second round than in the first. If you really don’t believe in something, if you think it will be If you are defrauded, why are you going to leave your house and go to the polling station? We know that voting is mandatory in Brazil, but you just need to justify it on your cell phone and if you don’t get a fine, it’s R$3”, he said.

After the elections, Bolsonaro and allies contested the vote count and cast doubt on the Brazilian electoral system. Moraes even blocked pages on social networks that disseminated this type of information.

The minister also commented on the selection criteria for vacancies of STF ministers. He defended that the regional issue and diversity are important, but that does not mean that a court is better or worse because of that.

“This is important because the Supreme Court is a federal court, it judges federal conflicts. It does not mean that a minister from the south is better or worse than a minister from the Northeast, who in turn is better or worse than a minister from the center. west, but the thoughts are different”, he said.

“The focus is adverse and that goes for men, women, whites, blacks. It doesn’t mean that the black minister is better or worse than the white minister, that a black minister is better or a white minister than the white minister.”
