In December, the Ministry of Women allocated R$250,000 to carry out the second phase of the 1st Brazilian census of the lesbian population, a stage that is expected to be completed by December and which will involve 135 interviews with lesbians in all states.
The feature will begin rolling out in January. The second stage will be qualitative, with semi-structured interviews (flexible, in which it is possible to deviate from a previously agreed script) with people who participated in the first stage and agreed to speak in this second stage. There will be 5 per state, for a total of 135.
The action is an initiative of the National Secretariat for Institutional Articulation, Thematic Actions and Political Participation, of the Ministry of Women, and will be carried out by UFPR (Federal University of Paraná).
The results will be published in e-books and scientific articles. The ministry sees mapping as a way of “strengthening a network consolidation strategy to confront conservative attacks, to guarantee access to rights, as well as to welcome and support this group.”
In January, the Ministry of Women will also hold the first meeting of the Forum for the Promotion of Strategies for Economic Autonomy and Care, Confronting Violence and Institutional Articulation of Public Policies for Lesbians. The space will discuss strategies and actions to prevent violence against lesbians.
