The Minister of Human Rights, Silvio Almeida, intends to tell a UN body on combating torture, this Wednesday (19), that former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) worshiped torturers and encouraged abuses by public authorities.
Almeida will speak to the Committee to Combat Torture, based in Geneva (Switzerland). He will present the second Brazilian report to the body, more than 20 years after the first.
Bolsonaro is openly an admirer of the military regime, in which torture was a state practice. One of his idols is Colonel Brilhante Ustra, who headed torture centers during the dictatorship.
The minister also intends to say that documents presented by the previous government on the subject are not consistent with the truth.
The UN Committee against Torture is the body in charge of monitoring compliance with the Convention against Torture, ratified by Brazil in 1989. The minister also intends to meet representatives of civil society to debate the issue.
