The Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, says he regrets the situation he created after using an electronic cigarette at a meeting of Embratur (Brazilian Agency for the International Promotion of Tourism), held this Thursday (14).

As the column showed, the head of the department drew attention and caused discomfort due to his behavior when participating in the press conference that marked the launch of the Tourism Data Panel, prepared by Embratur in partnership with Tourism and the Federal Police.

In addition to arriving late, Sabino caused interruptions when talking to people around him and used a vape. The entire event was broadcast virtually.

“The Minister of Tourism regrets the situation and explains that he has been fighting to get rid of cigarettes for about a year and that, despite the difficulties of treatment, he feels that he has made progress. He discourages the use of any type of cigarette, even electronic, and will strive to eliminate this habit”, says the folder, in a new one sent to the column.

The ministry also explains the fact that Sabino wore a t-shirt, and not formal attire, during the presentation. “This is a practice adopted with pride since the beginning of his tenure at the ministry to promote destinations and attractions in the cities he visits, and will be maintained. It is with these t-shirts that the minister participates in hearings, visits cities and participates in events”, states the note.

The piece used this Thursday, according to the ministry, highlighted the attractions of the city of Ponta Grossa, in Paraná, where Sabino was with the “MTur Itinerante” project recently.

The minister and the president of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo, were the two main speakers at the presentation. Sabino, however, arrived late to the virtual meeting and began his participation while still in a car.

According to reports made to the column, employees even asked the minister to turn off his personal cell phone during the presentation.

Even the details of the Tourism Data Panel, in charge of Freixo, ended up compromised due to the distractions generated by Sabino.

The tool was developed by Embratur in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and the Federal Police to gather information about the entry of foreign tourists into the country and the financial transactions made by them. The idea is to provide more transparency to the data, which can be used by public managers, civil society and journalists.

A federal deputy elected by Pará and affiliated with União Brasil, Sabino took office in July this year, replacing former Minister of Tourism Daniela Carneiro.

The choice was part of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) strategy to improve his relationship with União Brasil and guarantee the party’s votes in the Chamber of Deputies.

The minister was one of the enthusiasts of Arthur Lira’s (PP-AL) campaign for the presidency of the Chamber, in 2021, having contradicted his own party at the time, the PSDB, which embarked on the candidacy of Baleia Rossi (MDB).

Since then, he has gained prominent roles at the hands of Lira, such as rapporteur for the reform of Income Tax rules, in 2021, and the presidency of the Mixed Congressional Budget Committee, in 2022.

In this last position, he was one of Lira’s main assistants in managing and distributing the so-called rapporteur’s amendments, the main instrument used by the president of the Chamber to ensure support for his surroundings and the then government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
