Brasilia DF) – Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, 65, was elected this Wednesday (9) president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The inauguration should take place on September 28 and the mandate is for two years.

The current President of the Court, Minister Rosa Weber, will retire at the end of September. She turns 75 on October 2, the date of her mandatory retirement. The election is made among the ministers of the court.

Barroso was elected with ten favorable votes. Edson Fachin received one vote: it is common for the minister who will assume the presidency to vote for his deputy, who will be Fachin.

Likewise, for vice president, Fachin received 10 votes and Alexandre de Moraes, one.

Elections to the Supreme Court are protocolary. In practice, the STF adopts a rotation system for the succession of its presidents based on the criterion of seniority. The longest-serving minister who has not yet presided over the STF is elected.

After the result was announced, Barroso said it was an “immense honor” to lead the Judiciary, made up of thousands of dedicated and selfless judges, who distribute justice throughout the country”.

“I receive this task with immense humility, aware of the weight of this responsibility”, he declared.

Barroso has been a minister of the STF since 2013, appointed by former president Dilma Rousseff (PT). He holds a PhD in Public Law from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj), a Master’s in Law from Yale Law School, in the United States, and a professor of Constitutional Law at the same university.

The minister also acted as attorney for the State of Rio de Janeiro and in private law.
