Minas Court closes representative office in Brasilia – 02/13/2023 – Frederico Vasconcelos

The President of the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais, Judge José Arthur de Carvalho Pereira Filho, distributed this Monday (13) an internal statement informing the decision to close the activities of the representative office in Brasília.

The space was created at the end of the administration of the predecessor, judge Gilson Lemes, who used the property for political contacts and support for the re-election of Jair Bolsonaro.

José Arthur claims to have taken the measure “to prevent an absolutely functional and productive structure for this Court from serving to create controversies”. He is also the target of complaints for having created a position that did not exist until then, which freed Lemes to circulate in Brasília.

The initiative takes place on the eve of the CNJ session that can judge disciplinary complaints against Lemes.

The president says the office was “extremely useful”, but “has been used to cause rifts” between members of the court “including calling on control bodies”.

Last Wednesday, judge Marco Aurelio Ferenzini filed a disciplinary complaint with the CNJ against Gilson Lemes and José Arthur. He calls for the initiation of disciplinary proceedings against both, and the closure of the office, considered “an excrescence” and a “strange invention to the practices of the courts”.

Ferenzini asked for the deconstitution of José Arthur’s ordinance that created the position of Institutional Legal Superintendent for Lemes. The act was defined as “an affront to the Full Court, to the internal and constitutional order that regulates the matter”.

“There is no way to justify the daring initiative”, he says. For Ferenzini, Lemes “has the clear purpose of being appointed to the Supreme Court or, at worst, to the Superior Court of Justice”.

The TJ-MG signed a R$ 607,000 contract with the CNC (National Confederation of Commerce) for the installation of the office. Closing could subject the court to a fine, as the lease provides for a five-year lease.

José Arthur determined the return of Lemes to jurisdictional activities this Monday. On the 8th, he visited the president of the CNJ, Rosa Weber, and the national justice inspector, Luis Felipe Salomão, rapporteur for the complaint that is on the agenda for this Tuesday.

possible to the most efficient administration of justice in Minas Gerais.
