Meeting with Minister of Mines and Energy seeks to overturn electricity tariff adjustment in Amapá – News of Brazil

This Thursday (21), the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, received the Amapá delegation, with governor Clécio Luís, senators Randolfe Rodrigues and Davi Alcolumbre, Minister Waldez Góes, parliamentarians from the Federal Bench and the legislature state, to discuss the best solution regarding the 44.41% tariff adjustment, proposed by the concessionaire Equatorial Energia and which was accepted by the National Electric Energy Agency.

During the meeting, all parliamentarians and the state governor were unanimous in stating that the population cannot afford this abusive increase. Only in the last three years (2020/2021/2023), Amapá could have the biggest adjustment in history, almost 90% of the value of its electricity bill.

“It is inconceivable that a needy population like that of Amapá would have to bear an abusive increase of 44.41% in their electricity bill. In ten days, Minister Alexandre Silveira committed to presenting a proposal for a provisional measure that addresses this readjustment”, highlighted Senator Randolfe, leader of the Government in the National Congress.

“We know that the only way to reduce inequality in Brazil is through employment and income opportunities for the people, and electricity is fundamental to this. We are going to face this problem structurally, because this tariff issue is a priority for the Lula government”, stated minister Alexandre Silveira.

ANEEL’s justification

In a note, Aneel highlighted the following justification for the increase: costs with sectoral charges, pressured by the loan from the water scarcity account which, in the case of Equatorial Energia, was also used to pay deferrals that occurred in previous years; costs of the concessionaire’s distribution activities and investments made in the concession area since 2017, due to the regional characteristic of low demographic density and dispersed consumer units; and the removal of financial components from the previous tariff process, which contained mitigating measures used to mitigate the effects of last year’s adjustment.
