Meet the trainees of Folha’s journalism program – 03/20/2023 – Novo em Folha

The new Daily Journalism Training Program at Sheet, aimed at black professionals, began on March 6. There are 12 trainees, selected among 726 applicants, in a competition of 60 candidates per vacancy.

The course is coordinated by Flavia Lima, Assistant Writing Secretary, and by Suzana Singer, Training and Seminars editor.

It is the third time that the newspaper organizes a class with only black journalists. The objective is to increase diversity in the newsroom.

The course is sponsored by Philip Morris. “The company is undergoing a major transformation, in search of a smoke-free future. This journey includes an innovation process that is only possible with the work of teams characterized by diversity, which bring to the company the representation of what our society is . We have a series of programs in this sense. We believe that initiatives like this one from Sheet contribute to a fairer and more equitable society”, says Priscilla Staell, communication manager at Philip Morris Brasil.

Meet current trainees.

Geovana Oliveira, 24, is majoring in journalism at UFBA (Federal University of Bahia). His final work will be a podcast about how the presence of young people in the Rádio Metrópole newsroom has changed the programming of the Soteropolitan station. She was one of those newcomers and hosted a show aimed at audiences of her generation. Before journalism, Geovana studied civil engineering, following her father’s advice, focused on “profitable education”. But she didn’t like the exact ones. “I want to tell stories, in any format.”

Raised until he was four years old in a wooden shack in a favela in the north of São Paulo, Jonas Santana, 24, is completing a journalism course at USP (University of São Paulo). She has already worked at Repórter Brasil and UOL. “Dreams guide our lives. We make them come true and create others”, she says. Another dream come true was doing an exchange program: he spent a semester studying in Rome. His goal now is to achieve financial independence.

the journalist Adriano Alves, 29, was born in Petrolina (PE) and attended university in Juazeiro (BA). Today, he still divides himself between the states: he lives in Bahia, but crosses an 800-meter bridge every day to work in the municipality of Pernambuco. Pernambuco or Bahia? “Peba,” she replies. He loves art and almost studied theater. He has been working on local TV for eight years and writes as a freelancer for national vehicles. His goal is to work with what he calls deep journalism, which demands more attention than factual journalism.

Vinícius Barboza, 26, lives in Cajamar (SP), took a technical course in chemistry and started a degree in the area. As he got stuck in calculus classes, he rethought his career and entered journalism. He likes to read news about everyday topics, economics and sports. “Searching for public interest guidelines, listening to people and reporting facts brings a satisfaction that I didn’t find in the laboratory”, she says. He works at a public relations agency in São Paulo serving beer brands.

Mineiro from Belo Horizonte, João Rabelo, 32, is a journalist and holds a Masters in Social Communication from UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais), where he researched poetry and psychoanalysis in structural cinema. Since graduating, he has taken separate courses in literature and philosophy, the most recent being on the aesthetic theory of the German Theodor Adorno (1903-1969). A regular reader of newspapers and magazines, he is also interested in art and politics. “I’ve been into these themes since I was very young,” he says. He works with content production for cultural centers.

Alan Souza Born in Maranhão, he spent most of his 20 years without Nova Iguaçu, in Baixada Fluminense. He is studying the last year of journalism at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro). He says that at age 10 he created a kind of weekly newspaper that circulated through the family. The incentive to pursue a career came from his mother and an art teacher, who always praised his texts. He passed through the communication sector of the EBC and the Federal Regional Court. His dream is to be the editor of a culture section.

“Music accompanies my family”, says the Salvadoran Pedro Nascimento, 36, journalist graduated in 2021. Pedro started singing in the choir of the Federal Institute of Bahia at the age of 16, but says that since before, he already showed an interest in writing. Today, he works to bring the two things together: he is studying a master’s degree in communication at UFBA (Federal University of Bahia), and he develops academic research on the construction of meanings in music.

the baiana Mariana Brasil Oliveira, 21, says that journalists are formed on the street, talking to people, breathing people, listening to the most diverse views of the world. “I consider myself a social being for living it,” she says. Journalism student at UFBA (Federal University of Bahia) and intern at Grupo Metrópole, Mariana is also a volunteer at the international NGO Teto Brasil, which builds emergency homes.

Graduated in journalism from the University of Sorocaba five years ago, Lucas Monteiro, 26, is the creator of Ponto mp3, a podcast producer founded in 2019. Born in Sorocaba, in the interior of São Paulo, he says he learned sound editing on his own, without taking any courses. In journalism, he targets the area of ​​politics. For two years, he juggled college classes with a job as a building janitor and used his salary to pay for his studies. “It was traumatic, but there was learning. ”

documentarist, Pedro de Alencar, 30, was born and lived in Niterói (RJ) until 2021, when he moved to Salvador, where he is studying for a doctorate in communication at UFBA (Federal University of Bahia). “I fell in love with the city when I visited for tourism and decided that I would live here”, she says. Pedro says that his interest in journalistic work emerged during his graduation in cinema. “Since then I’ve had the journalism bug biting me,” he says. He believes in a press “vigilant towards state abuses”.

Journalist graduated from PUC-SP, Nadine Nascimento, 27, is from São Paulo and has worked in various areas of communication. She had stints at Le Monde Diplomatique and Brasil de Fato. She was also a parliamentary advisor. She is currently an editor at the Alma Preta journalism agency. In her professional career, she came into contact with topics related to culture, politics and diversity. Her profession, according to her, complements her questioning side, in need of change.

Member of Agência Mural, which covers the outskirts, Katia Flora dos Reis, 42, graduated in journalism in 2008. A resident of São Bernardo do Campo, in Greater São Paulo, she has already been awarded with two reports: one on suspicions of fraud in school lunches during the government of João Doria and another on causes of accidents in the Presidente Dutra highway. She once thought about being a basketball player, but gave up because she didn’t have the right height. In addition to sports, Kátia enjoys literature.
