The Ministry of Education extended for another 90 days the suspension of 17 undergraduate courses in the EaD (Distance Education) modality, starting on February 29, 2024. The decision was published in the Official Gazette of the Union, last Wednesday (28).

The extension of the measure affects the following distance learning courses:

  • Physical education;
  • Nursing;
  • Pharmacy;
  • Physiotherapy;
  • Speech therapy;

The announcement of the suspension of distance learning courses was made by minister Camilo Santana last year, after the opening of a public consultation to evaluate the regulation of distance education in higher education. In six statements, the body suggests penalties for institutions with low quality and the prohibition of distance learning (EaD) for 16 undergraduate courses.

The MEC created this consultation after receiving the report from a working group created by the body to analyze the quality of distance learning and its dizzying growth in recent years.

Although entities representing private institutions agree that there must be improvements, they demand that the MEC take initiatives that evaluate the quality of courses and measures that only affect low-income institutions. The creation of a regulatory agency is considered a solution by both sides, but it is still necessary to discuss how the agency will act.

According to the latest Higher Education Census, from Inep, the number of places in courses in this modality grew 139.5% in the last four years, going from 7.2 million in 2018 to 17.2 million in 2022. The most affected by the suspension are the Northeast (56,691 graduates), the Southeast (175,000) and the North (46,095).

During the release of the Higher Education Census, the minister stated that the distance learning scenario is “alarming and challenging”. “The role of the MEC is this: to coordinate and regulate this [crescimento dos cursos EaD]. So it requires a red light so that we can take action”, highlighted Santana.
