MDB leaders see support for Lula’s reelection as inevitable – 08/13/2023 – Panel

MDB leaders are unanimous in ruling out their own candidacy in the 2026 presidential election if President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) seeks re-election.
The tendency, according to the Panel, is for the party to join the PT’s formal coalition from the start. The MDB is from the base of the government and has three ministries: Renan Filho (Transport), Jader Filho (Cities), and Simone Tebet (Planning), who was a candidate in 2022. It also holds dozens of second-tier positions.
A historically divided party, the MDB today has a largely majority Lula wing.
The probable adherence of the MDB to Lula’s re-election would put the PSDB, with whom the party formed a coalition last year, in a difficult situation. The toucans, whose pre-candidate is the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, would be isolated. In the MDB, there are already those who predict that Leite will run for the Senate in 2026, preserving himself for the 2030 election.
