Mayor of Santos switches PSDB to Republicans – 10/17/2023 – Panel

The mayor of Santos (SP), Rogério Santos, decided to exchange the PSDB for the Republicans. The act of affiliation was scheduled for October 28th, in the city on the coast of São Paulo.
In the event’s publicity material, Rogério appears alongside Marcos Pereira, president of the party, and Tarcísio de Freitas, governor of São Paulo.
The migration is symbolic of the party seesaw in São Paulo, where the PSDB lost the government of São Paulo for the first time in 28 years, saw its influence diminish and opened space for the growth of acronyms that orbit Tarcísio, such as Republicans, PSD and PP.
The change from the PSDB to the Republicans is part of the current mayor’s group’s strategy to try to weaken a possible competitor in his quest for re-election in 2024, federal deputy Rosana Valle (PL).
If she decides to run next year, she will have the support of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), but now she must be without Tarcísio, who will be linked to Rogério Santos.
For the governor, his proximity to the mayor could also imply important support for one of the projects for which he is most enthusiastic, the privatization of the port of Santos.
Recently, in a ministerial reform of the Lula (PT) government, the Republicans managed to nominate Silvio Costa Filho as Minister of Ports and Airports, opening another channel of influence for Tarcísio to try to advance his privatization proposal.
