“May Lula have mercy”, says retired PM major in CPI on 8/1

The retired major of the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF), Cláudio Mendes dos Santos, appointed as one of the leaders of the camp at the Army HQ in Brasília, asked this Thursday (9) for “mercy” from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and minister Alexandre de Moraes. He gave a statement to the CPI investigating the acts of January 8th, in the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District.
“The country needs Jesus and love. I ask President Lula, I even voted for him, to have mercy. I know he’s not a bad person. I ask Alexandre de Moraes to look carefully. […] Every day we pray in the prison for Alexandre de Moraes and Lula”, he declared.
Santos was identified as the pastor who held services at the Army HQ, and is being investigated for teaching guerrilla warfare to protesters. He was arrested in the 9th phase of Operation Lesa Pátria, by the Federal Police, on March 23. The case against the retired major includes the crimes of violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, qualified damage, criminal association, incitement to crime, destruction and deterioration or destruction of specially protected property.
In his statement to the CPI, Santos denied several allegations attributed to his participation in the events. Regarding the videos in which he appears asking for donations via PIX and which were shown at the CPI, he confirmed that he made the requests, but informed that none of the amounts entered his account and that he did not know who received the donations.
The retired major also denied having led the events at the HQ, minimizing it and saying that he only prayed there, as he was a pastor. “People were healed there, this is spiritual, cured of illnesses,” he said.
The CPI meets again next Thursday (16) for its last hearing, with testimony from Colonel Reginaldo Leitão. As head of the PMDF Intelligence Center, he entered the CPI’s radar after district officials discovered that he was part of a WhatsApp group where information about the acts of January 8 was circulating.
