A prize-winning denunciation by Mauro Cid would be “the glory” for the January 8 CPI, says the commission’s rapporteur, senator Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA), who is reluctant to summon relatives of the former adjutant Jair Bolsonaro (PL) if he remains silent this Tuesday (11).

The testimony of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid to the CPMI is seen as fundamental to clarify points of the coup acts of January 8th. He was also summoned to talk about the alleged tampering with the ex-president’s vaccination cards – which is why he has been in prison since May.

That same month, lawyer Rodrigo Roca, linked to the Bolsonaro family, left the defense of the lieutenant colonel and was replaced by lawyers Bernardo Fenelon and Bruno Buonicore — the former is a specialist in plea bargaining.

For Eliziane, Mauro Cid’s information would facilitate the commission’s work. “An award-winning delation from him to the CPI would be glory”, says the rapporteur.

The senator recalls that there is a precedent of the STF (Federal Supreme Court) that authorizes Mauro Cid to remain silent only on issues that may incriminate him. “We will once again invoke this decision to try to gather as much information as possible from him, not least because he is a very central piece in this”, she says.

Eliziane is also cautious about the possibility of summoning the lieutenant colonel’s relatives, as some government supporters want. “I think that if we can’t extract elements from it that we think are fundamental and basic, we should naturally look for other alternatives. But it’s not something that’s on our radar.”

The senator also points out that, if Bolsonaro’s former assistant lies, he may be subject to a false testimony process.

“I don’t think we can spend the whole time thinking that people come here and are going to lie, as we’ve seen so many lying,” he criticizes. “I think it vulgarizes if we don’t take a more energetic attitude, and, in his case as well as in those to come, I will be defending a false witness case.”
