Mauro Cid will be investigated and testified at the CPI on January 8

In a publication on social networks, this Saturday (24), the president of the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry of January 8, deputy Arthur Maia (União Brasil-BA), stated that Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former aide of the ex-president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), will be heard in the collegiate both as a witness and as an investigator.
“We inform you that the deponent will appear as investigated, referring to the facts in which there is an accusation against him, and as a witness in the others”, wrote the deputy in his Twitter profile.
The statement comes after Minister Carmem Lúcia, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), asked the CPMI under what condition the military would be heard. On Thursday (22), Cid filed a request for habeas corpus at the Court.
The commission’s rapporteur, senator Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA), defended that Cid be heard as a witness. “In a 1st round, Mauro Cid needs to be heard as a de facto witness in order to evolve later into an investigation,” she told journalists on Thursday.
The definition of the conditions of Cid’s testimony comes after George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, arrested for the attempted attack at Brasília airport, invoked the right to remain silent for most of the questions asked by the commission.
However, Arthur Maia cited a STF decision to make him answer at least the questions that would not incriminate him.
With this, it was defined that people who are investigated have the right to remain silent when questioned in CPIs. However, this right is not unrestricted.
Bolsonaro’s former assistant has been in prison since May 3 after being the target of an operation by the Federal Police that investigates the insertion of false data in vaccination cards against covid-19.
In that same investigation, the PF found on the cell phone of the former aide-de-camp a draft of the Guarantee of Law and Order decree – a device that can only be signed by the President of the Republic. The measure became known as the “draft of the coup”.
There is still no date for the military hearing.
