Economist Mauro Boianovsky, 64, died in the early hours of this Wednesday (21). A professor at UnB (University of Brasília), he was one of the main theorists on economic thought in the world.

Boianovsky graduated in economics from UnB and obtained a master’s degree in the same area from PUC in Rio de Janeiro (1989). He also had a PhD in economics from Cambridge University and a PhD from Duke University.

The economist worked until last year as a full professor at UnB, teaching the subject history of economic thought, a subject in which he specialized. He also had expertise in the areas of macroeconomics, monetary theory, economic growth and development, and unemployment.

Boianovsky had several award-winning works. In 2007, for example, an article on economic theory by Don Patinkin —Israeli monetary economist— was awarded by the History of Economics Society, an entity that brings together researchers from different countries, focusing on discussions about the history of economic thought.

In 2011, he was awarded a laureate by Anpec (National Association of Postgraduate Centers in Economics) for an academic article on Celso Furtado.

Four years later, he was elected president of the History of Economics Society for a one-year term, becoming the first Latin American to head the body, based in the United States.

Boianovsky also wrote several books in partnership with fellow researchers, such as “Celso Furtado and 60 years of Brazilian Economic Formation” and the most recent, “A History of Brazilian Economic Thought”.

The academic had advanced stage liver cancer. He leaves two children, Ilana and Daniel David and a granddaughter, Isabela. The burial took place at 4:30 pm this Tuesday, at the Cemitério Israelita de Brasília. There was no wake.
