Marta Suplicy will present a speech with a return home tone in her reaffiliation with the PT, this Friday (2), and will avoid addressing the raids that led her to leave the party and the vote for Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment, according to people who spoke with the former mayor in recent days.

The event will be attended by President Lula (PT), who articulated her return to the party — which she left in 2015, after 33 years — to be vice-president of Guilherme Boulos (PSOL). The idea of ​​rescuing it to boost the ticket in the first election with the PT without its own candidate in the capital was anticipated by Sheet in November.

With a festive air, the event at Casa de Portugal, a space in the central region, will bring together a thousand people, as expected by the organizers, and will also feature Boulos and PT leaders.

Marta has been preparing her speech with maximum discretion, but recent comments and gestures were read by people around her as an indication that she will extol her links with the PT and cite the confrontation with the camp of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as a reason for her return.

A video with the song “De Volta pro Aconchego” on the soundtrack, published this week on the former mayor’s Instagram profile, is seen as a sign of her state of mind and the message she will convey. The song, voiced by Elba Ramalho, accompanies images of Marta with Lula at different stages, as well as photos of her with Boulos and PT leaders. Finally, an invitation appears for this Friday’s event.

“It’s good to be able to be with you again” and “I’m happy to return” are some of the lyrics.

The future vice-president had meetings in recent weeks with Boulos himself and parliamentarians and PT leaders at the municipal, state and national levels. The objective was to strengthen relations, align messages and overcome resistance to his return — minority wings of the party intend to contest reaffiliation.

Marta wants to take advantage of the occasion to reaffirm her identification with values ​​present in the founding of the PT, such as the defense of social justice and policies for the poorest, and reinforce attributes that made Lula seek her back, such as administrative experience and capacity for dialogue .

Treated as an asset for Boulos, the former mayor will also have negative aspects exploited by rivals, especially Ricardo Nunes (MDB). The group running for re-election seeks to brand her as a traitor, for leaving her position as secretary of his administration to ally with her opponent.

The assessment of Marta’s interlocutors is that she appears to be well resolved with her biography and willing to use her energy in what is described as a call for Lula.

She has repeated that her trajectory is marked by courage and boldness and that, deep down, the PT never left it. In recent conversations, she recalled that she saw the party born in meetings at her house and helped to consolidate it. When she broke up, she said that the acronym had left its “ethical principles” behind.

The former mayor’s speech, her first since accepting Lula’s invitation, will also point to the future and encourage activists to get involved in the campaign.

Marta does not want to dwell on explanations or excuses about her political turn, which included stints with MDB and Solidariedade and support for Bruno Covas (PSDB), who defeated Boulos in the second round in 2020.

The main intention is to reiterate the pragmatism necessary to avoid a victory in the capital of an ally of Bolsonaro, in this case Nunes. The campaign is based on the rhetoric that the democratic camp needs to unite against the extreme right in the country and isolate Bolsonarism — 2026 is the backdrop.

An enthusiast of the so-called broad front that gave Lula victory over the former president, Marta believes that her support for the PT member in 2022 symbolizes her commitments and could help in her reintroduction into PTism. At the time, she was still with Nunes, who did not declare support for either of them.

This Friday’s speech will also show the role she hopes to have in the campaign and in an eventual government. The main intention is to appear as a point of balance, someone who contributes to alleviating Boulos’ reputation as a radical and acts as a link with sectors averse to him.

There is an effort to associate it with characteristics such as hope, generosity, work and maturity.

The strategy defined with PT and PSOL is for the former mayor to rescue marks and achievements not only from her performance as mayor (2001-2004), but also from the other two left-wing administrations, those of Luiza Erundina (1989-1992) and Fernando Haddad (2013-2016).

Marta has already called Haddad “the worst mayor São Paulo has ever had”. The current Minister of Finance had his presence confirmed at the act of reaffiliation, in what was announced as a demonstration that past hurts and criticisms have been overcome and that victory in October is a priority.

Along these lines, the expansion of alliances will be emphasized in the statement, with calls for unity and conciliation. She wrote on social media, days ago, that “the election will be decided by the center” and “it has to be expanded to defeat Bolsonarism once and for all.” Nunes’ union with Bolsonaro was her justification for changing teams.

The pre-candidate for vice, however, should leave the direct confrontation with the mayor to Boulos, to avoid embarrassment due to the fact that she was part of the current administration until last month. The idea is that she addresses urgent problems and suggests proposals, but avoids vocalizing attacks on Nunes.

Based on what was outlined behind the scenes, Boulos’ protagonism should be valued, with the vice-president acting as someone who respects each person’s space and also adds a feminine look to the ticket. The order is to join forces and work as a partner that brings solutions, not problems.

“We decided that, more than her act of affiliation, it will be an event to present our candidacy”, Boulos told the reporter, on Tuesday (30), during a meeting with supporters in Jardim Peri. During the tour through the north, the psolist stated that the dispute will be tough and asked for engagement from the base.

Marta’s name was mentioned several times in the activities, both with expressions of approval for her return and in memories of her administration.

According to allies, the former mayor is excited to participate in the street campaign, which will also serve to recover legacies seen as lures for voting for Boulos. In the coming days, the two will have an agenda in Parelheiros, a region in the south where she maintains support.

“Her presence also has the sense of reinvigorating militancy”, says the municipal president of the PT, Laércio Ribeiro, who says he sees Marta in a movement to reunite with her roots.
