Brazilian Marlei Willers and Kenyan Vestus Cheboi won the 38th Porto Alegre International Marathon, held on Sunday (4).
Marlei’s achievement was especially celebrated by fans who took to the streets of Rio Grande do Sul to follow the race. Born in Paraná, Marlei lives in the small Morro Reuter (RS), a city considered “the first step of the Serra Gaúcha”, 59 km from Porto Alegre.
“This race is great. It was a dream to win in Porto Alegre. I used the whole crowd to my advantage. After km 32 I managed to take the lead after the Kenyan (Vivian Kiplagat) slowed down. This was thanks to the affection of the crowd that I gave strength and applauded on the course. It was very emotional The victory was a great gift for me and also for Rio Grande do Sul”, said Marlei after the race.
Marlei consolidates her name as one of the main Brazilian long distance athletes. She was runner-up at the São Paulo International Marathon in April. Not bad for someone who started running five years ago, when she was 39.
In the men’s category, Vestus Cheboi confirmed his history of good results in Brazil. The Kenyan, who won in São Paulo, opened up an advantage after the first half of the race and was no longer caught. The best Brazilian was Gilmar Lopes, in third.
“I am very happy with this victory in Porto Alegre. I love racing in Brazil because of the people. I managed the second fastest marathon of my career. Porto Alegre will be forever in my heart”, said Vestus Cheboi moments after crossing the finish line.
