The new president of Santos, Marcelo Teixeira, stated this Saturday (9) that the team will not wear the number 10 shirt while competing in Series B of the Brazilian Championship. For him, the Second Division would not be up to the number immortalized by Pelé.
“I anticipate an idea: we are going to propose to the deliberative council that, in the Campeonato Paulista, we will normally act with the number 10 shirt. In the Brazilian Championship, until we rise and are at our level, at our level, worthy, we will not act with the number 10 shirt”, he said.
“In memory, in honor, since this year we had in the championship [Brasileiro] paying homage to King Pelé, we will continue in this mission. Until we return, Santos Futebol Clube will not wear the most glorious shirt in its history, number 10”, he added.
The person who wore the number 10 shirt this year was Venezuelan Yeferson Soteldo, one of the rare highlights of the relegated squad.
Elected this Saturday, Teixeira returns to command Santos after 13 years. He was at the helm of the club in 1992, 1993 and from 2000 to 2009.
He defeated four competitors and received 4,762 votes out of almost 8,800 possible.
The election had moments of tension. A group of fans broke into one of the access gates to the Athiê Jorge Coury gymnasium, where voting was taking place, and began a conflict with exchanges of aggression with security guards hired by the club.
The main target was Celso Jatene, former Secretary of Sports of São Paulo and current president of the Deliberative Council.
The problem was controlled with reinforcement from the Military Police Shock Troops. According to the Santos sectional delegate, Rubens Eduardo Barazal, those responsible quickly dispersed. One of them was detained.
The investigation began at around 5:20 pm, with a slight delay to compensate for the almost twenty-minute stoppage due to confusion.
Teixeira will have as vice-president Fernando Gallotti Bonavides, former president of the club’s Deliberative Council between 2016 and 2017.
