The STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) punished this Thursday (1st) eight players involved in the Maximum Penalty operation, by the Public Ministry of Goiás, which investigates match-fixing in Brazilian football.
They are accused of involvement in the case of manipulation of football matches in Brazil. The Public Ministry of Goiás identified situations in which athletes were approached to force cards or commit penalties, with the aim of illicit gain on sports betting sites.
Defender Eduardo Bauermann, from Santos, one of the main names in the investigation, was sentenced to 12 games of suspension. The athlete cried when he heard the rapporteur’s vote.
In alleged conversations between the player and a gambler, via WhatsApp, he would have recognized that he received R$ 50,000 to take a yellow card in a match against Avai, for the Brazilian Championship last year. He would not have complied with the agreement, but agreed to force an expulsion in the next round, against Botafogo. The player received red after the end of the match, which is not accepted by some bookmakers.
The toughest sentence was for Gabriel Tota, formerly of Juventude. He was banned from football and fined R$50,000. The athlete is suspected of having enticed other players to participate in the scheme. Another banned player was goalkeeper Matheus, formerly of Sergipe.
The complaint against left-back Igor Cariús, formerly of Cuiabá and more recently at Sport, was rejected.
