Mangabeira says he will go to the STF against Bolsonaro’s arrest – 02/15/2024 – Mônica Bergamo

Philosopher Roberto Mangabeira Unger intends to file a preventive habeas corpus with the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to guarantee that Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will not be arrested.

Mangabeira, who was Lula’s (PT) minister from 2007 to 2009 and supported Ciro Gomes (PDT) in his presidential campaigns, being considered the PED’s guru, has already consulted friends in the legal field and politicians about the initiative.

He also spoke with authorities from higher courts in Brasília and with Bolsonaro himself about the lawsuits the former president is facing in court.

The two have already met in person.

The Constitution allows any citizen, whether or not he is a lawyer, to file a habeas corpus petition in court if he understands that another person’s fundamental right is threatened.

The philosopher states that it is necessary to reconcile the country, and that to do so it would be important that Bolsonaro be spared a prison sentence that could radicalize the spirits of his supporters.

From left to right, the initiative surprised interlocutors because Mangabeira has always been in the left-wing political camp, while Bolsonaro openly defines himself as a right-wing politician.

A professor at Harvard University since 1971, Mangabeira states in his conversations that he is concerned about the fact that Bolsonaro has become ineligible due to a decision by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

He says it would be more democratic if the former president could run, competing with Lula over the narrative about which public policies would be best for the country.

Mangabeira is inspired by US rules, which allow a person to run for President of the Republic even after being convicted and imprisoned.

Bolsonaro was the target of a search and seizure at his home in Angra dos Reis (RJ) last week.

He is being investigated for allegedly participating in a plan to carry out a coup d’état in Brazil.

By order of STF minister Alexandre de Moraes, he had to surrender his passport and was unable to communicate with the other people being investigated — many of them, military personnel who were part of the first echelon of his government.

When contacted by the column, philosopher Mangabeira Unger stated that he was entering the classroom and that he would return the call later.
