Manaus (AM) – Manaus FC debuted in the 2023 season last Sunday (29), in a 1-1 draw against RPE Parintins, in the first round of the Amazonense Championship. The match took place at Arena da Amazônia and was marked by tributes from Gavião do Norte to Pelé, King of Football who died on December 29 after a fight against cancer.
Exactly one month later, the emerald players entered the field with a banner dedicated to Pelé, which carried the following message: “Thank you, Pelé, for making our football eternal”. On shirt number 10, the number immortalized by the King in Santos, New York and in the Brazilian national team, the club prepared a tribute by stamping a crown on the back of the shirt, which will remain throughout the State.
The one chosen to wear the King’s number in the first match of the season for Gavião Real was midfielder Gabriel Lima, who highlighted the honor of wearing number 10.
“Pelé was the greatest player of all time and always represented Brazilian football with mastery. Very gratifying to be able to wear the number immortalized by him and be part of this tribute that the club prepared. All respect to the King”, said Esmeraldino’s number 10.
Director of marketing and communication at Manaus FC, Thiago Martins spoke about the meaning of the homage.
“The value that Pelé has as the ultimate symbol of football is undeniable. And if Manaus FC exists today, it is also because of his contribution. It is not new that the club pays homage through shirt numbers and, therefore, we saw number 10 as a way of remembering why we are making history today”, said Thiago.
The director referred to the retirement of shirt number 25, which was used by Hamilton, the greatest scorer in the history of Gavião do Norte, before his departure for football abroad.
Manaus FC is now off in the second round of the Amazonense and returns to the field on Sunday (5), against Operário. The match will be valid for the third round and will take place in Manacapuru (100 kilometers from Manaus), at the Gilberto Mestrinho stadium. The team occupies, momentarily, the fifth place in the State table.
