Six months after being recreated by the federal government, the Mais Médicos program reached 18,500 professionals working in primary health care, a record number, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
Almost all of the members are Brazilian physicians trained in Brazil, followed by Brazilians trained abroad.
The previous record, 18,200 doctors, had been registered in 2015, during the government of former President Dilma Rousseff (PT). At the time, Cuban doctors represented more than 60% of the total.
According to Saúde, around 13,000 doctors filled vacancies in 2023 during the administration of Minister Nísia Trindade. The program currently serves around 4,000 municipalities.
The reformulation carried out by the government included a BRL 120,000 bonus for those who stay for 48 months in the most vulnerable cities. In June, the government announced an additional 10,000 vacancies, with priority given to municipalities with greater fragility.
