Magno Malta makes a transphobic speech at an event with Michelle – 03/21/2023 – Politics

Senator Magno Malta (PL-ES) made a transphobic speech during an event that marked the inauguration of former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro in charge of PL Mulher, this Tuesday (21), in Brasília.

At the same meeting, deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of Jair Bolsonaro, treated with irony a transphobic speech made by Bolsonarist deputy Nikolas Ferreira, on International Women’s Day.

On stage alongside other authorities, Magno Malta stated that women are stronger than men, because “women have a uterus”.

“But there’s one thing that makes them that way: women are born with an extra part. Men are weaker because they have that part missing and they’ll never have it, not with surgery or wanting to or ideology. Women have a uterus. [Homens] never will,” he said.

The statements come two weeks after federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) put on a wig and made a transphobic speech in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies.

That day, Nikolas said that women have been losing ground to “men who feel like women”. “They are wanting to impose a reality that is not reality,” said the deputy.

Nikolas was criticized by parliamentarians and suffered a public reprimand from the mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), on the same day. He also became the target of criminal notices sent to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) and had a request for impeachment filed with the Council of Ethics of the Chamber.

Such as Sheet showed, however, despite the articulation of political parties to impeach the Bolsonarist deputy, party leaders claim that the loss of mandate is unlikely. In the assessment of these leaders, he should receive a warning, censure or, at most, suspension for speaking.

This case was treated with irony by Eduardo Bolsonaro at this Tuesday’s event. When Nikolas was called to the stage to join the authorities, Eduardo took the microphone from the hands of the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, and said: “Deputy Nikolas will now define what a woman is”.

Valdemar and other people present at the event laughed at the intervention. “Very good”, said the president of the PL.

Valdemar had already come out in defense of Nikolas on social networks. Two days after the parliamentarian made the transphobic speech, Valdemar said that the deputy has the support of the national leadership of the PL, that he must be respected and that “freedom of expression and its parliamentary prerogatives will always be defended” by the party.

At this Tuesday’s event, only two women spoke on stage at the first moment: Michelle and federal deputy Soraya Santos (PL-RJ), who passed the position of president of PL Mulher to the former first lady.

On the other hand, five men spoke: former president Jair Bolsonaro, on video; Valdemar Costa Neto; Magno Malta; the leader of the PL in the Chamber, Altineu Côrtes; and the governor of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello.

After the initial speeches, there were thematic debates with women only.

The former first lady is considered a bet for the PL for the 2026 election. The president of the legend, Valdemar Costa Neto, however, told the press before the event started that she has no intention of running for any position.

The party also believes that the former first lady could act to increase the number of women affiliated to the party. For that, she will have to make caravans around the country. In her speech this Tuesday, Michelle said she will do her best “for the effective growth of women’s participation in Brazilian politics”.
