Rumors about a possible Madonna show on Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro, which would be held on May 4th, caused a sudden inflation in accommodation prices in the Rio neighborhood.

There is still no official confirmation about the singer’s presence in Brazil, but according to the Madonna Online fan club, the queen of pop is preparing a performance for the first weekend of May, which would be free and held along the lines of the Rolling Stones show. Stones in 2006. “Madonna chose Brazil to give this surprise to the best fans in the world”, wrote the profile in a post on Instagram.

A good example of the soaring prices is the Royal Rio Palace hotel, a four-star hotel that is 500 meters from Copacabana Palace, where the singer will supposedly be staying. On normal days, a daily stay there varies between R$430 and R$700. But for Saturday, May 4th, the cheapest room available costs R$1,600. Those who want to check in on Friday (3) will also pay more: on this date, the cheapest daily rate costs R$811.

On the other side of Copacabana beach, close to post 6, Selina (elected as one of the best places in the country according to the list “100 Incredible Hotels in Brazil”, by Sheet) also increased prices. With daily rates that normally range from R$336 to R$420, the hotel already charges R$1,300 for the night on Friday, May 3rd, and R$1,500 for the night on Saturday, May 4th. On Sunday, the price returns to normal: R$395.

Price research was carried out by the report on the Booking.com website and are valid for two adults. Even with the rise in prices, most of the hotels in Copacabana are already sold out.

On the other hand, at least for now, this inflation is restricted to Copacabana hotels. At the Hotel Nacional, which is 600 meters from the São Conrado subway and 25 minutes by subway from Copacabana, all nightly rates start at R$872, including the weekend of May 4th.

There are room options that accommodate up to four people for R$1,026 per night — which is just over R$250 per night/guest. By subway, it is possible to go from the hotel, also among the 100 incredible in Brazil, to the vicinity of the possible show in just 25 minutes.

At the Lapa unit, Selina does not increase prices significantly — at least for now. There, where daily rates normally cost R$374, the cheapest rooms for the weekend of May 3rd to 5th still cost R$444. The subway journey between the hotel and Copacabana takes around 15 minutes.

Contacted by the report, Booking.com reported that, for the period between May 3rd and 5th, Rio de Janeiro is already the most searched domestic destination by Brazilian travelers on the platform, and the second most searched Latin American destination by global travelers —second only to Cancún. Rio is also the fifth most sought after city by global travelers in the Americas – behind New York, Las Vegas, Orlando and Cancún.
