President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s trip to China has in his entourage representatives of two companies that are protagonists in one of the biggest recent disputes in the Brazilian courts, J&F and Paper Excellence.
The first is a holding company that controls JBS, owned by brothers Joesley and Wesley Batista, who will be on the tour. The second, an Indonesian pulp manufacturer, will be represented by three people: Claudio Cotrim, president, Amaury Pekelman, director of institutional relations, and Marcelo Kim Yuen Pan, legal director.
The companies are fighting for controlling interest in Eldorado Brasil, J&F’s pulp and paper arm. In 2017, the company was put up for sale. Paper Excellence would buy 100% of the company, but the sides disagreed in the process and the negotiation was interrupted. The fight involves R$ 15 billion.
In an interview with Sheet in 2019, Claudio Cotrim accused the Batista family of having requested BRL 6 billion more than they would be entitled to in the contract to finalize the deal. The parent company of JBS initiated two lawsuits, one civil and one criminal, against Cotrim for the statements made in the interview with Sheet.
As the travel and accommodation costs will be paid by the businessmen, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, they will not travel on the same flight. However, they will meet at events held for representatives of both countries.
