The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China confirmed, in a daily press conference, that it was informed by the Lula government of the decision to postpone the state visit. “We understand and respect this decision,” said a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry. “We will remain in contact with the Brazilian side about the visit.” Beijing wished the Brazilian president a speedy recovery.
The possibility of canceling the trip worried Brazilian diplomats, businessmen and authorities in Beijing. More than 100 businessmen were already in the Chinese capital, in addition to the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, who held institutional and work meetings in advance.
Members of the government and Brazilian agribusiness businessmen suggested that Lula travel in May, around the 18th, to take advantage of a local food fair, SIAL, which is usually attended by Xi. Lula could amend his state visit to China with a trip to the G-7 summit in Japan. But diplomats weigh potential Chinese sensitivities and availability on the country’s president’s agenda. Fávaro confirmed the proposal for the trip in May, but said that now the new date depends on a decision by China.
