President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) decided this Wednesday (28) that the coordination of his personal security will return to the Institutional Security Office (GSI). The decision was announced by the Ministers of the Civil House, Rui Costa, and Justice, Flávio Dino, this afternoon. Presidential security will be operated in a hybrid model with members of the Federal Police and even with the participation of civil and military police.
“As predicted, in a consensual, harmonic way, the president decided on a hybrid model, in which everyone will work together”, said Costa. The Extraordinary Secretariat for Immediate Security, coordinated by the PF, had been responsible for protecting the president since January. However, the secretariat is provisional and will be extinguished after this Friday (30).
According to Dino, there are no impasses between the GSI and the PF regarding the new model. Behind the scenes, the case would have been a reason for dispute between the two bodies. “GSI will have a military and civilian character. The important thing is that we have a model that meets the main goal: families and the president and vice president will have adequate protection. There is no divergence between the Civil House, GSI, Federal Police”, emphasized the Minister of Justice.
“Coordination is by the GSI, in a cooperative, participatory, integrated manner. And, eventually, at the wish of the president or vice president, even military or civil police officers can be invited”, reinforced Costa. The head of the Civil House said that the determinations on presidential security will be published in the Official Gazette (DOU) by Friday (30).
